The Mandeville Curriculum

At Mandeville we believe learning should be a rewarding and enjoyable experience for everyone. Our teaching aims to equip children with the knowledge, skills and understanding necessary to make informed choices about the important things in their lives and to take responsibility for their own learning.
Children in upper key stage two benefit from an extra hour in their school day, finishing at 4.15pm on some days. During the last hour of these days, the children are taught art, music and PE aspects of their curriculum by specialist teachers. This ensures that our priority of providing a broad curriculum to our children is upheld and taught to a high standard, as well as giving an extra hour in the main part of the day for ensuring depth of learning in other subjects as the children prepare for secondary school.
We have worked hard to create a Mandeville Curriculum which follows the National Curriculum at the same time as providing the learning, opportunities and experiences that are particularly pertinent and important to our children. For this reason, PSHE in considered a core curriculum area alongside English, Maths and Science, and Latin is taught in KS2 to provide a strong foundation of language on which to build at secondary school later on, as well as supporting children's understanding of English spelling and grammar.
Core curriculum areas are supported by our thematic approach to the Foundation Subjects. This approach provides a rich menu of exciting and motivating learning activities that make creative links between all aspects of our children’s learning. Sequences of learning in each topic follow four stages:
How will all of the subjects be covered?
At Mandeville School we believe in the value of lifelong learning and that people learn new things every day; learning should be a rewarding and enjoyable experience for everyone. Our teaching aims to equip children with the knowledge, skills and understanding necessary to make informed choices about the important things in their lives and to take responsibility for their own learning. We believe that appropriate learning will lead to happy and rewarding lives. Every aspect of our curriculum is underpinned by the five British values of:
- The Rule of Law
- Individual Liberty
- Mutual Respect
- Tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs
The development of English language skills is a conscious concern in every aspect of school life. Each day provides the opportunity to develop children’s speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. A daily English lesson ensures that all these skills are covered.
The daily mathematics lesson ensures that all children have a well planned and challenging maths education throughout their time at Mandeville School. A Singapore approach to the teaching and learning of mathematics ensures children are able to master mathematical concepts and apply their "number sense" in a range of contexts. Calculators are often used in the classroom, and times tables and mental arithmetic skills are regularly practised. Maths is also regularly included in other curriculum areas, such as science, history and geography.
